How do I know I need a dental crown?

When a tooth is broken, has extensive decay, or a defective filling, but still has a healthy root, it can be restored. Many patients are worried about the cost, potential pain, and the time the treatment will take. At Dental Medellin, Dr. Camilo Aguirre advices patients not to put off necessary dental procedures out of fear or uncertainty. The problem gets more difficult and likely more expensive to solve with time.

A tooth subjected to extensive damage, not possible to be restored with a bonding technique,  will need to have a crown placed. Crowns are also used following a root canal, when the tooth is cracked, when a cusp is broken, or when the tooth has a poor appearance. Crowns are also placed on top of dental implants that are used to replace missing teeth or to provide stability to teeth that are loose.

Dental crown  procedure

The entire process for a dental crown typically takes two visits to the dentist’s office.

During the initial visit the tooth will be prepared for the crown. The process starts with the strengthening of the remaining structure by applying filling material when the tooth has been fractured or broken. Then the tooth will be shaped to have enough space for the crown.

Finally we take an impression of the prepared tooth and surrounding tissues to make a model for the lab to work on.

The crown will be created at a laboratory using the impressions and following the specifications we provide for the correct shade, shape and contacts. While the final crown is being created, the patient will receive a temporary crown to provide protection for the prepared tooth. Once the crown is ready, the patient will return to have the final crown placed.

How long does a dental crown last?

With proper care, the crown should last 15, 20 years or more.
Is a dental crown a painful procedure?  With the use of local anesthesia, is pain free.

Dental crowns (or caps) are dental restorations that are placed over a tooth when conservative restorations are insufficient to restore form and function. A dental bridge serves to replace a missing tooth or teeth. One type of dental bridge consists of dental crowns placed on either side of the missing tooth to connect the replacement tooth or teeth to them. Another type of dental bridge consists of the replacement tooth attached to the adjacent teeth with wing-like appendages. Dental bridges can also be supported by dental implants. Dental crowns and bridges can be made entirely of tooth-colored material, metal, or a combination to provide optimal aesthetics. Some metal-free dental crowns and bridges incorporate stress-bearing materials to enhance their strength and wear-resistance.

When is a  dental crown required?

Crown and bridgework is a very reliable solution for major dental problems caused through accidents, diseases or wear and tear. Major problems can usually be corrected using these techniques. Material used in these repairs is either high-grade porcelain, or porcelain bonded to gold. A higher strength of the porcelain and gold materials is recommended to treat the most serious of dental problems. Where accidental damage has occurred, resulting in lost teeth, or where teeth have broken away through excessive wear, or as the result of old fillings breaking, crowns and/or bridges can be used as a long-term solution.

Many people have unexplained pain from filled back teeth, which is usually due to  cracks in the chewing part of the tooth. Placing crowns on these teeth relieves the pain and allows a return of full dental function for these teeth. In front teeth, older fillings can both weaken the teeth and cause “appearance” problems due to staining or chipping. Porcelain crowns and bridges are suitable in cases where porcelain veneers are not. In teeth with root canal fillings, crowns can prevent breakage.

Is A Dental Crown Right For Me?

A dental crown has many advantages. Dental crowns address aesthetic needs, restore tooth function, and enhance the overall health of your mouth. In cases where teeth have large broken down fillings, a dental crown can protect and preserve the remaining natural tooth. To enhance your smile, metal-free, tooth colored, porcelain crowns can also replace older metal or metal with dental porcelain crowns. Porcelain crowns have translucent qualities that, with the help of an expert cosmetic dentist professionals like Dr. Aguirre at dental Medellín,  can look just like natural teeth. Following root canal therapy, a dental crown is typically placed over the remaining tooth structure to preserve aesthetics and tooth function.

Anatomically a tooth can be divided into two greater parts: the root, which is the support part of the tooth and is implanted within the maxillary or mandibular bone, and the crown, the visible part of the tooth.

Under normal conditions, meaning when we find healthy tissues, the root of the tooth is covered by the gums and bone.

Dental crowns as prosthetic devices,  are artificially created tooth structures that cover the visible part of a tooth. Dental crowns not only performs the function of a natural tooth, but it to a great extent restores and protects the integrity of damaged teeth. A dental crown treatment may be used to protect a cracked tooth, restore functionality of a tooth with excessive decay or replace a pre-existing crown.

The purpose of  dental crown treatment  is to reinforce a compromised tooth with a custom-designed form built with a biocompatible material.

Dentists today have a variety of conservative treatment options through which to restore teeth. If possible, these options should be explored and discussed before selecting the full coverage crown.

Dental crowns are built from different materials. Modern dental crowns can be made in porcelain fused to metal (PFM), or entirely of porcelain for better esthetic results.                 Porcelain is a ceramic mineral material used to mold in conformity to the tooth to be restored, replicating the look of the natural tooth.

Today’s porcelain dental crowns are so strong they can provide the necessary strength and resistance to grinding to guarantee a long lasting dental restoration.

Porcelain dental crowns are used when a tooth has been damaged beyond the possibility of being restored with a conventional filling, after a tooth facture, tooth decay, broken or damaged filling, or extreme tooth wear.

Dental crowns in porcelain can now closely recreate the form and function of a damaged tooth.

Dental crowns covers completely the visible exterior part of the tooth from the gum level to the cusps or more prominent parts.

When do we choose to perform a dental crown treatment?

When the tooth is severely damaged, as in extensive decay, breakage, damaged extensive fillings, etc., that prevent the tooth from being restored with a filling or other conservative treatments, we then discuss with patient the option of doing dental crowns.

In some cases it is necessary to first have root canal treatment done before building the dental crown.

After we make a thorough dental examination and have a diagnosis and a complete view of the needs and specific individual conditions of our patient, we make sure he /she receives a detailed description, and all the possible alternatives for a complete dental treatment plan.

The Dental Crown Clinical Procedure

During the dental crown procedure, we dentists first prepare the tooth under local anesthesia to the specific shape needed, then make a close copy of it and the surrounding tissues by taking an impression of the whole area with a silicon material.

The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory for the dental crown to be created.

In the meantime we construct a customized temporary crown to protect the tooth while the final dental crown restoration is being made.

Once the  dental crown is completed, we try it in the tooth to make sure it fits and color is correct, as well as checking biting contacts. When everything is proved to be as desired, the tooth crown is cemented using a dental cement.

Crowns not only replace the original integrity and function of a tooth, but also improve its esthetic appearance.
